PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

“Because of the devastation of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the needy,
Now I will arise,” says the Lord; “I will set him in the safety for which he longs.” (Psa. 12:5)
We have always looked at the story of King David and Bathsheba from David’s view point and often not what the adultery cost Bathsheba. And before you raise any opinion on this, let us ask ourselves this question: could Bathsheba have refused David’s sexual advance? Bathsheba was a subject at the mercy of the king's arbitrary choices, making true refusal practically impossible. Prophet Nathan later compares David’s actions to a predator taking what does not belong to him. Recall Queen Vashti who was dethroned because she refused to carry out the king’s order. Bathsheba’s refusal could have got her killed.
What did David's solo decision and action cost her?
Bathsheba lost her dignity. She carried her shame in silence.
It became worse when she found out she was pregnant
Her first and legal husband was killed because of the unsolicited affairs
She lost her first born son.
Bathsheba’s life was turned upside down in a moment over an illicit affair.
There are a lot of women out there who are like Bathsheba today. The world blames them but never the men involved except that we lose sight of one thing and that is the most important - nothing is hidden from God. God is the God of the oppressed and not the other way round. Any woman in Bathsheba’s shoes will equally rise from the ashes in due time. No sinner will go unpunished.
The same Prophet Nathan who spoke to King David regarding his sin involving Bathsheba and the murder of her husband, Uriah (2 Samuel 12) was the same one who politically maneuvered David and teamed up (Nathan and Bathsheba) to secure Solomon's succession to the throne. "Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him." (Psa. 126:5-6)
David had many wives before Bathsheba and many sons who were qualified to be kings after him. What existed did not qualify Bathsheba’s son to be king after David. But justice is justice and when God says so, it is so. This is why some children born of the likes of Bathsheba become the cornerstone. Bathsheba’s shame, silence, pains, patience paid off. She comes up in Jesus genealogy.
