Doctrine-Based Obedience: This approach views obedience as a checklist. It can lead to self-righteousness, as an individual measures their spirituality strictly by what they do or do not do. It tends to make obedience the cause of a person's standing with God, rather than the result of it. (By Today in the Word) Whereas, Faith-Based Obedience: is the act of following God’s commands and guidance, not out of rigid legalism or forced duty, but as a natural loving response to genuine Christian faith. It comes from conviction from the heart. It is not imposed; it is willing. It is not obligatory but sincere. It is not performance, not pretence, it becomes who you truly are.
MOTIVATION
Doctrine: Duty, obligation, or fear of punishment. Faith: Love, devotion, and gratitude.
FOCUS
Doctrine: Rules, regulations, and performing rituals. Faith: Trust in God's character and promises.
OUTWARD SIGN
Doctrine: Mechanical compliance or "going through the motions. Faith: "Fruitful actions that naturally flow from a changed heart.
SCRIPTURAL BASES
Doctrine: Associated with Old Testament Law or legalistic traditions. Faith: Known in the New Testament as the “obedience of faith” (Rom. 1:5)
Doctrine-based obedience relies on adhering to strict rules or theological frameworks, often motivated by leaders for duty or fear of judgment. Sometimes, it makes the individual smaller than they should be in the society. In effect, they only walk in the company of people similar to their doctrine. And if care is not taken,it could easily migrate into a cult. In contrast, faith-based obedience is a natural, loving response to a personal relationship with God. While the former focuses on keeping laws, the latter focuses on trusting submission.
"For we walk by faith, not by sight." (2 Cor. 5:7)
To walk by sight: Living only by what you can see, touch, or prove right now.Trusting only physical proof, temporary comforts, or human logic.To walk by faith: Letting God’s truth guide your daily choices. Trusting God's promises and eternal unseen reality, even when current life circumstances are hard or unclear.
THE WORD: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight".(Prov. 3:5-6 NIV)
