PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” (Mat. 8:2-4 NIV)
“.....the man is diseased and is unclean. The priest shall pronounce him unclean because of the sore on his head.“Anyone with such a defiling disease must wear torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt, cover the lower part of their face and cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!” (Lev. 13:44-45 NIV) “....or any person who makes him unclean, whatever the uncleanness may be. The one who touches any such thing will be unclean till evening.” (Lev. 22:5-6)
Why would Jesus touch the Leper? We know that Jesus did not need to touch the Leper to heal him. He performed miracles without touching. What is Jesus telling us by this act? The Law says even the priests who have contact with the unclean, themselves remain unclean (Lev. 22:4-8; Num. 19:7). Is this similar to “the sabbath was made for man and not man for the sabbath expository?
The shocking nature of Jesus’s miracle is that he touched the leper without becoming contaminated. Perhaps Jesus’s touch symbolizes that he identifies himself with sinners to secure their salvation. He takes our stain; we get his holiness. The cleansing this priest provides runs deeper than the skin’s surface; it cleanses the body and the heart. This points us to one fact that even the priests are not spiritually pure. They carry sin like the rest of the people. Therefore, they can be contaminated. So, sin plus sin is equal to sin (sin + sin = sin) But Jesus is Holy, therefore His holiness removes the stain of sin. (Holiness + sin = Holy) His touch of the Leper and the dead daughter of Jairus (Mark 5:21-43) did not make Him unclean, rather they made the contaminated clean.
The other reason is that Jesus Himself, is a Priest and His priesthood is in the order of Melchizedek (Psa. 110:4; Heb. 5:10; 6:20; 7:17). His priesthood is much higher and superior to that of Aaron. Therefore, He has the authority to touch and declare the Leper clean. This miracle centers more on cleansing than healing and as discussed in previous ‘Meditate day and Night’, Jesus makes us whole - “your faith makes you whole”. This means our sins are forgiven, we are cleansed, and we are healed.
Jesus’ touch of the Leper did not only show that He is compassionate, it is confirmation that He will also touch you irrespective of your diseases if you cry out to Him.
