What do we call ‘the church?’
The New Testament does not give a single name for the global church rather it uses names like the body of Christ, the church of God, and the churches of Christ. Many people today understand the church as a building and it is ironic that when you ask people what church they attend, they usually identify a building. So, today, we call the church a building. But here is what the Bible says: “And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” (Eph. 1:22-23 NIV) The Church is the body of Christ not your denomination.
Is God in the Church?
Yes, because it is written: "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Mat 18:20 KJV)
Is God in the building?
No. Because it is written: "However, the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says: 'Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be?” (Acts 7:48-49 NIV)
Where is the Church?
"Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?" (1 Cor, 3:16) "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price ".(1 Cor. 6:19) You are the church and you should reverence your body more than you reverence the altar in your assembly.
The church is anywhere more than two people of faith in Jesus Christ meet - in the bus, market, on the street, in the house, school, etc.
Who is the church?
The individual who believes in Jesus Christ is the church (John 3:16). This is why we need to honour ourselves knowing that you are interacting with the temple of God. (1 Cor. 6:19-20; Psa 139:14; Rom.12:10)
Why do we go to ‘Church’ when believers can meet anywhere?
We assemble in a building we can call church (because believers are standing together) to worship together, to build a strong community of believers, encourage other believers, and grow in faith through His Word. (Heb. 10:25)
Pockets of believers are key to growth in Christ.
THE WORD: “Greet also the church that meets at their house.” (Rom. 16:5 NIV)
