To tarry means to stay longer than expected.
"For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay." (Hab.2.3.NIV)To linger means to tarry. To tarry means to delay. So, we have God saying, 'Though it delay/tarry, wait for it, it will certainly come and will not delay."
Now, we have man's timing and God's timing. We also have the instruction that whatever happens, 'WAIT FOR IT'. Then the assurance, 'IT WILL CERTAINLY COME' and not Delay.
But it was already delayed and that was why Habakkuk grew impatient! So, what does this means for us?
IT MEANS GOD'S TARRYING IS A TRAINING TOOL TO TEACH US PATIENCE, UNWAVERING FAITH AND TRUST.
God says He knows our needs (Mat. 6:8). He says before we call He has answer (Isa. 65:24). If these statements are true, and they are true, why the delay? It can only serve to highlight our faithfulness or the lack of it. It brings out our true colour, the real identity (true or fake followers of Christ).
Because Samuel delayed, Saul already had an alternative (1 Sam. 13:8-15). Why did Samuel delay? To test Saul's obedience and patience. How often have you abandoned God's blessings because of impatience? How often have you settled for people's advice and/or seek help from lesser gods?
"But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.
(Mat.24.48-50.NIV) (The servant's real identity)
Moses tarried, Aaron succumbed to idol. Sarah and Abraham's impatience cost them Ishmael. Job never wavered, he got all his blessings restored. Habakkuk agreed to wait and he was blessed. JESUS IS DELAYING HIS RETURN; WILL YOU STILL WAIT, PATIENTLY WAIT?
WORD: "The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light." (Rom.13.12.NIV)
