Have you ever wondered why Saul, the first king of Israel failed? Did it ever cross your mind that maybe he was designed to fail so that the people may regret their rejection of God? Have you ever questioned if he was ever equipped for the role of kingship?
All these and more had passed through my thoughts until I listened to the audio of the Yoruba version of 1 Samuel 10, read by my senior brother.Surprisingly, Saul was well equipped for his new role.
1. Samuel anointed him with oil just as he would later anoint David. "Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance? " (1 Sam.10.1.NIV)
2. God gave Saul another heart (1 Sam. 10:9)
3. The Spirit of God came upon Saul and he prophesied ( 1 Sam. 10:10)
4. God, no doubt was with Saul (vs.7b)
5. The nations presented themselves to the Lord by their tribes and clans, Saul's tribe was chosen. Then his clan, then his father, and then him; evidence that God chose him openly and in the presence of all.
Saul received a new heart and became a brand new person, the chosen and the Spirit of God was upon him. That is the same anointing available to all believers in Christ Jesus. That same Spirit that engineered the early disciples to succeed.
So, why did Saul fail?
He failed because of his persistent disobedience to God's commands. We all can be spirit filled and still be our old self. Disobedience to God is killer NO.1 to eternal life.
Saul was stubborn, self-assured and self-seeking. His personal ambition blinded him from taking advantage of the presence of God in His life. He thought more of pleasing man than pleasing God.
We are not better than king Saul as long as we ignore the leading of the Holy for the voice of man. As long as we are short sighted and unable to see or appreciate the bigger picture.
God did not short-changed Saul. He gave Himself up as King for Saul to be king just as Jesus gave Himself up for our redemption and kingship.
