Towards the end of Jesus' earthly journey, He devoted His time to point us to what will happen before His second coming and also what qualifies His followers of a place in His Kingdom. One of those qualifying factors is good deeds. The separation of the sheep from the goats (Matthew 25:31-46). It will be based on outward works of love and kindness. The presence of love and compassion is taken as an inherent part of true faith and salvation.“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left." (Mat.25.31-33.NIV). The sheep, the righteous, on His right, will be directed into eternal life (Mat. 25:46b). Why? Doing good reflects God's character. God's nature is one of love, compassion and justice, and followers are called to reflect these qualities in our actions and choices. “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?" (Mat.25.37.NIV)
The Scriptures warn that we should not overlook the poor, the orphans, the fatherless, widows, strangers and the brethren being persecuted, the sick and those in prison. The essence is to look out for one another. "not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." (Phil.2.4.NIV)
Good deeds or doing good is not just a deciding factor but a core principle and a reflection of faith intertwined with actions that demonstrate love, compassion and obedience to God.
Any wonder why God sent the most senior leader of the early church, Peter, to Cornelius, a Gentile, who gave generously to those in need?!
The Good Samaritan's parable is to encourage us as well as focus us on what is more compassionate and rewarding even than our primary assignments.
Acts of kindness is one of the qualifications to earn a place at the right hand of the LORD - FAITH + WORKS.
WORD: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." (Gal.6.9&10.NIV)
