PRESUMPTUOUS SIN - Devotional

PRESUMPTUOUS SIN (Psa.19:13)
"Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression." (Psa.19.13.NKJV)

A presumptuous sin is a willful, deliberate act of disobedience committed with full knowledge and against God's law, often with a sense of arrogance or disregard for His authority. It is a sin committed intentionally and with a degree of defiance as opposed to a sin committed out of ignorance or mistake. (AI Overview)

This SIN seems unforgiveable according to Numbers 15:30. “But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or foreigner, blasphemes the Lord and must be cut off from the people of Israel. Because they have despised the Lord’s word and broken his commands, they must surely be cut off; their guilt remains on them.” (NIV)

It is in a situation like this that the praise, worship and thanksgiving to Jesus Christ is and should be loudest because presumptuous sin can be forgiven though it attracts greater punishment. “And a servant who knows what the master wants, but isn’t prepared and doesn’t carry out those instructions, will be severely punished." (Luk.12.47.NLT)

The culprits of presumptuous sin are actually those who know the right thing to do but deliberately trample the knowledge under foot. It is a direct confrontation with God which attracts His anger. David wrote: "I eat ashes for food. My tears run down into my drink because of your anger and wrath. For you have picked me up and thrown me out." (Psa.102.9-10.NLT).

For a moment, one may try to find excuse for David's adultery (moment of weakness); but is his orchestrating Uriah's death a moment of weakness or presumptuous? Solomon pursuit of foreign women, Judah, the scepter, who went to visit his friend and ended up marrying a Canaanite (Gen. 38), or Jonah who ran away but ended in the belly of a fish?

Unfortunately, many believers are guilty of presumptuous sin. The cost of this sin is unforgivably harsh. Because, and most assuredly, we are already equipped by the power in the blood of Jesus not to fall under its weight. The Holy Spirit is our Help at this crossroad.

THE WORD: “But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." (Luk.12.48.NIV)
