ELISHA WAS SICK AND HE DIED!
"Now Elisha had been suffering from the illness from which he died....... “The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” (2 Kings.13.14.NIV)
The Bible is full of mysteries, surprises, wonders, and puzzles. Some are easy to resolve or come to terms with. Some just cut through your soul like Elisha suffered a protracted illness! Elisha, the man with double the anointing of Elijah! Elisha, the man anointed with HEALING ministry. The powerful prophet of Israel! Why was he sick? Why didn't he command a miracle/word to heal himself? Did he even called on God for his healing? We may never know. That does not make it less puzzling that the man of God was ravaged with sickness in his old age. It simply reminds us of the fallen nature of man.
"When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, no one can discover anything about their future." (Eccl.7.14.NIV)
The consequences of the fall of man included physical and spiritual death, separation from God, corrupted nature and a world marked by suffering and imperfection. Can we truly escape this bodily pain? The body must decay even before the breath is out. Because God said so. "from dust; to dust" (Gen. 3:19). Reality dictates that great people of faith die, and ironically death sometimes comes through sickness even to those who have themselves had a healing ministry. Among the consequences of the fall of Adam and Eve are sickness and death; no one is exempt from them.
The destroyer of the body is already in the body hence it is written: "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell." (Mat.10.28.NIV). The most important part of this corruptible body is the soul. Guard the soul from destruction. The cage we call body will wither, weakened, For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall," (1 Pet.1.24.NIV). Remember the flower doesn't fall at once; it is slowly one petal at a time. The green grass too turns brown gradually before falling.
The hope we have is this corruptible body will one day be changed into incorruptible body.
THE WORD: "The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven. And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man....Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." (1 Cor.15:47,49,58.NIV)
