Whitewash in biblical terms, refers to a superficial covering or deceptive appearance that conceals the true nature of something. It is often used metaphorically to describe hypocrisy, false righteousness, or act of covering up sin and corruption with a facade of purity or integrity.
Whitewashers are supposed 'men and women of God' who are rewriting the Bible. They are false prophets, pastors, shepherds, men in long robes, who manufacture their own words under the cover of God said. They interpret the Word of God according to what the people want to hear. Their words massage the ego of their followers. "Tell these whitewashers that their wall will soon fall down. A heavy rainstorm will undermine it; great hailstones and mighty winds will knock it down. And when the wall falls, the people will cry out, ‘What happened to your whitewash?"
(Ezek.13.11-12.NLT).
Paul wrote: "But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! .......
Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ." (Gal.1.8-10.NIV). Hence, we cannot have it both ways. It is either they preach to please God or to please people because of personal gains. The painful truth about these whitewashers is the harm they inflict on the people, misleading the people and toying with their eternity.
Jesus said: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness." (Mat.23.27-28.NIV)
Whitewashers or false prophets will face the consequences for preaching false messages, using God's name to lie but are not accountable for misleading you. Everyone will have to face the consequences of their own errors.(Gen. 3) But the watchman will be blamed for not warning the gullible.
THE WORD: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." (2 Tim.2.15.NIV)
