IRON SHARPENS IRON - Devotional

PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT.
August 20th, 2025

IRON SHARPENS IRON.
"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Eph.4.32.NIV)

No man is an Island. Iron sharpens iron is to give back what we received - it is a support system that should be available to all who believe in the Word of God. Imagine a blunt, dull and rusty iron and you need to file your knife which is not as sharp as it should. You try sharpening your knife using the rusty metal. Two things will automatically happen; your knife will shine better, ready to be more useful and the rusty iron/metal may not be sharp, but that spot on which you filed your knife will shine too. It is a support system that screams “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." (John.13.34.NIV). Do not be a hoarder but a sharer.

"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." (Prov.27.17.NIV) - positively influencing and improving each others character through interaction and mutual encouragement. "Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited." (Rom.12.10-16.NIV)

Here is what the Preacher, the son of David wrote: "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up......Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." (Ecc.4.9-12.NIV) And Jesus crowns that by saying; “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven." (Mat.18.19.NIV)

Are we using these advice to our advantage? Believers are edging to a dangerously low level where we can no longer share our ups and downs with one another because you don't know who to trust anymore. People mock instead of encouraging. We pretend instead of presence. The result is we grow weaker as a group. We become more like Ananias and Sapphira instead of those with one heart and one soul (Acts 4:32)

THE WORD: "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
(1 Thes.5.11.NIV)
