WE CAN GROW LOVE.
Love is not often the passionate/romantic feeling experienced or as described in novels leading to the happily-ever-after. Once the magnetic attraction fails and is no longer there, there will be a breakdown in the relationship. This is an indication that the love has no roots or the roots are not deep enough to stand the test of time. But we can grow love. We can grow love like we grow a plant with tender care, patience, devotion, and commitment. And it can become as big, strong, deep, and solid as each person desires. Love grown like this, ends up being able to withstand different storms of life.
God first loved us. We never loved God. We love God because He loved us first. “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:9-10 NIV) The first lesson of love is SACRIFICE. Whoever is not willing to sacrifice cannot claim to love.
What is love?
The Bible defines love, not as a feeling, but as a selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional action that seeks the well-being of others. The well-being of others includes strangers, husbands and wives, siblings, friends, neighbors, and, more. Why? Because this LOVE is grown and when it takes root, deep roots, it becomes a big tree with thousands of leaves for shade, many branches and a base to accommodate many different peoples. It also produces enough fruit for all. Paul puts it this way:
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.” (1 Cor. 13:4-8 NIV) As you read this, IMAGINE YOUR TENDER PLANT – THE ONE YOU ARE DETERMINED TO GROW. You don’t complain. You simply find a way to nurture it to grow to produce fruit – THAT IS LOVE.
THE WORD: "By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren." (1 John.3.16.NKJV)
