The desire of many of us is the death of our ‘enemies’. There is the belief that if the enemy dies, we are even - which in one way is revenge that God warned us against. But what really does anyone gain from the death of an enemy? Absolutely nothing. There is no gain in the death of an enemy instead, you are likely to multiply your enemies, not reduce them. Why? Because, from the dead enemy, you raise more enemies. This is one reason family feud is ongoing.
Ask yourself, what do I stand to gain from the death of your supposed enemy? Name the enemy if you know him/her. Okay, he dies but before he goes, he already poisoned his family against you. The death of the enemy does not remove the root cause of the problem.
There is an immense benefit when an ‘enemy’ is drawn to Jesus Christ. The Bible says, pray for your enemies (Mat. 5:44). The advantage of that, especially if you are a believer yourself is when the ‘enemy' gets converted, he comes face to face with two or three things: 1) The word of God becomes his mirror too. He sees himself, the hatred, and the possibility of genuine remorse. 2) He repents. His repentance is the work of the Holy Spirit. He has what you have. 3) He is convinced he is wrong and he starts praying for you. It does stop there, he talks peace, love and mercy to his family and instead of multiplying enemies, we have increase on the scale of love and peace.
“Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice,
or the Lord will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from them.” (Prov. 24:17-18 NIV) David did not rejoice when Saul died (2 Sam. 1) Even then, the son of Saul, Ishbosheth took over the throne (2 Sam. 2-4). We read that Shimei, the son of Gera, a relative of Saul still accused David wrongly and even cursed him (2 Sam. 16:5-13). The root of hatred is strong and thick. Only LOVE can break it.
David asked God: “What will you gain if I die, if I sink into the grave? Can my dust praise you? Can it tell of your faithfulness? (Psa. 30:9 NLT) “As surely as I live, says the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live. Turn! Turn from your wickedness, O people of Israel! Why should you die?” (Ezek. 33:11 NLT). This is our cue. This is the way we should go. Forgive, seek peace, love unconditionally, pray more for your enemies, stop praying for them to die in their sin.
THE WORD: “But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.” (Mat. 5:44-45 NLT)
