PRETENCE - A FORM OF GODLINESS WITHOUT ITS POWER. - Devotional

PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

June 11th, 2026.

“The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows…..” (Luke 12:47-48 NIV)

There is no room for hypocrisy in the house of God or in His works. The scripture is very specific that “The soul who sins shall die.” (Ezek. 18:4,20) Therefore, the consequence of sin is death. In biblical terms, "death" signifies the ultimate penalty for unrepented sin. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 6:23 NKJV) This is well captured in the lives of Ananias, with Sapphira his wife (Acts 5:1-11).

Ananias and Sapphira conspired together to be who they were not. They seek honour in the house of God, in the presence of God, because they wanted to be on the honour list. They wanted to be counted among the elders of the church. They showed their hands as financial members - a pillar, a support system. To understand the catastrophe of their actions, you have to understand who they wanted to be and why. “Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common……..for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.” (Acts 4:32, 34-35 NKJV) So, Ananias and his wife borrowed the garment of deceit unaware of the power of the Holy Spirit - the God that sees us, and they died instantly.

Each person's eternal destiny is based on their own choices. The wicked will suffer the consequences of their own sins, while the righteous will be rewarded for their righteousness. The two tiny copper coins of the widow were so significant that Jesus Christ Himself not only observed but mentioned it (Mark 12:41-44). We give God from what He gives to us. We brought nothing to this world. We borrow all we spend from His provision. We do not need to lie about anything and especially not to God.

Achan in Joshua 7 lied and he was stoned to death. This was after about 3000 men had died in war because he disobeyed God. Our actions may mislead many if we are not careful. Our faith in Christ Jesus is not performatory. It is not for display on social media. Don’t do what they do. Do your giving in secret. Allow the power of godliness to work in you.

THE WORD: “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality.” (Col. 3:23-25 NKJV)
