But the king (David) replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” (2 Sam.24.24.NIV)


There are four types of giving to the Lord.

1. Abel's type. "By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead." (Heb.11.4.NIV) What did he do?

"And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering," (Gen.4.4.NIV)

2. The Widow's mite type - out of nothing. "Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” (Mark.12.43-44.NIV) She trusted the Provider like the widow of Zarephath.

3. Out of Abundance. Sharing your surplus without impacting your lifestyle but with a heart of gratitude and

4. Cain's type. Self reliance over faith reflecting pride and lack of faith. He chose to be creative and offer what he thought was acceptable. What did he do? "

In the course of time Cain brought SOME OF THE FRUITS of the soil as an offering to the Lord." (Gen.4.3.NIV) NOT the best, NOT the first. Just some. It could be the ones he detested. 

Malachi wrote: "When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty. (Mal.1.8.NIV)


How are you giving to the Lord? Your best, from your lack, from abundance with a grateful heart, from abundance arrogantly, or you just throw something in the offering bowl? Our God who sees in secret rewards every action.


THE WORD: “Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous." (1 John.3.12.NIV)
